I've been surfing for over 45 years and founded Formula Energy Surfboards in 2008.

But after all that time, one of the things I still enjoy most about shaping surfboards is simply talking boards with other surfers.

Everyone surfs differently.

Different waves. Different ability. Different age. Different fitness. Different styles.

And importantly, different ideas about where they'd like their surfing to go.

That's why ordering a custom surfboard from Formula Energy doesn't start with me telling you what you need.

It starts with a conversation.

You Don't Need to Know Exactly What You Want

This is probably something I want to make clearer.

You don't need to understand rocker, rail profiles, concaves, fin placement or exactly how many litres your next board should have.

That's my job.

Tell me:

What you're riding now
Your height, weight and age
Your surfing ability
Where you normally surf
The waves you want the board for
What you love — or don't love — about your current board
And what you'd like to get out of your surfing

From there we can start putting the pieces together.

Sometimes that means modifying one of our existing Formula Energy models.

Other times it means going in a slightly different direction.

The objective is always the same:

Build a board that makes sense for you.

Surfboards Should Make Surfing More Fun

As I've gotten older, my own quiver has actually become more diverse rather than less.

I'll ride performance thrusters, twin fins, fishes, mid lengths and step-ups.

I've learnt something from all of them.

There are days when you want speed and freedom.

Days when you want paddle power and glide.

And days when the waves are pumping and you want something refined that will hold when you really put it on rail.

I don't believe surfers need to be locked into one style of surfboard.

The right board can increase your wave count, give you confidence, help you surf better and sometimes completely change the way you approach a wave.

That's what keeps surfboard design interesting for me.

More Foam. Less Foam. Longer. Shorter. Let's Talk About Why.

Volume is useful, but it's only one number.

Where the foam is positioned, the rail shape, rocker, outline, tail width and bottom contours can completely change how that volume feels once you're actually surfing.

The same applies to board length.

A longer board doesn't necessarily mean you're giving up performance.

And a shorter board doesn't automatically make you surf better.

It's about finding the right balance between paddle power, speed, control, sensitivity and performance for the surfer.

That's where experience and a proper conversation make a difference.

My personal quiver changes constantly because testing different ideas is part of developing surfboards.

At the moment you'll regularly find an MLB Mid Length Beak, BOY – Best One Yet, or one of our newer performance twins and Mid-Up designs in my board bag.

I'll happily surf a mid length in tiny waves and then take one of our performance designs into solid Indonesian surf.

That's part of the fun.

I'm not particularly interested in telling surfers there's only one correct way to surf or one type of board they should be riding.

If it puts a smile on your face and makes you want to paddle back out, we're heading in the right direction.
