Ferrari Red Fresh Fish – Custom Surfboards Should Have Some Personality

I swear, adding some colour to a surfboard is nearly always the way to go.

Whether it’s a resin tint, foam spray or something completely custom, I’ve always loved seeing a bit of personality come through in a board. After all, if you’re going to have a custom surfboard made, why not make it look as good as it surfs?

I recently walked into a huge, well-known surf shop. There must have been hundreds of surfboards on the racks — and the thing that struck me was just how many of them were plain white.

Nothing wrong with a clean white board, of course, but seeing that many together made everything look a little… same.

That’s probably one of the things I still love most about building custom surfboards. Every board can be different.

Ferrari Red Fresh Fish

This latest Formula Energy Fresh Fish is a perfect example.

We went with a Ferrari Red colour that actually has a slight orange tone through it. In the flesh it absolutely pops, especially against the clean, minimal logos.

The dimensions are:

5'7" × 20 1/2" × 2 1/2" – 32.09 litres

It’s a compact little fish with plenty of foam packed into it, designed around that combination of speed, flow and easy surfing that makes a good fish so much fun.

And visually, I reckon this one came together beautifully.

Keeping the Surfboard Logos Simple

The surfer wanted the logos positioned close to the rail and kept to an absolute minimum.

I really like that approach.

You’re seeing more surfboard brands moving towards smaller, cleaner logos rather than covering boards in branding. I've never been a huge fan of big model logos either.

On our boards I generally just handwrite the model name onto the blue decal along with the dimensions and other information.

Simple.

It keeps the focus on the shape, the colour and ultimately the surfboard itself.

Make Your Custom Board Your Own

One of the best things about ordering a custom surfboard is that you don't have to choose something that looks exactly like everything else sitting on a surf shop rack.

Choose your dimensions. Choose your construction. Choose your fins.

And definitely think about adding some colour.

Resin tints, foam sprays and custom artwork can completely change the personality of a board without taking anything away from the performance.

We've been building surfboards for a long time, but there is still something pretty special about seeing a freshly shaped board come out of the glassing room looking like this.
