Nice Mid-Up Surfboard– Where Mid Length Meets Performance Step-Up

Introducing a new Step Up / Mid Length style of surfboard I have been working on .

This is a true Performance step up  Mid length twin fin .

Inspired by the positive feed back of the the MLB , MLT and BOY models and in the essence of pushing the performance aspect of a mid length . I have now released this new  Step Up hybrid / performance based Mid Length  and it is the The Nice Mid-Up . 

Nice Mid-Up – Where Mid Length Meets Performance Step-Up

Mid lengths have changed surfing.

The extra rail line, easy paddle power and ability to glide into waves earlier have made them incredibly popular — and for good reason. They're fun, they increase your wave count and they make surfing feel easy again.

But there comes a point where some surfers want more.

You still want the paddle power and confidence of a mid length, but once you're on the wave you don't necessarily want to surf like you're riding one.

You want to get back in the pocket.

That's where the Nice Mid-Up came from.

Overall the aspects of this board give it a lot of versatility .

Bridging the Gap

The idea was pretty simple:

Could we take the best parts of a modern mid length and blend them with the performance characteristics of a proper step-up?

Something that paddles easily, gets you into waves early and carries enough foam to make life enjoyable — but once you're up and riding, lets you push hard, surf vertically and put the board wherever you want it.

Not quite a traditional mid length.

Not quite a conventional step-up.

It sits right in the middle.

Hence the name — Mid-Up.

Easy In. Performance Out.

One of the frustrations with a traditional performance step-up is that they can be demanding.

They're generally narrower, more refined and designed around good waves and committed surfing. Fantastic when everything lines up, but they can sometimes feel like hard work when conditions aren't perfect.

At the other end, a fuller mid length gives you incredible paddle power and glide, but all that width, rail volume and surface area can start working against you when you really want to bury a rail and surf tightly in the pocket.

The Nice Mid-Up is designed to find the sweet spot between the two.

Paddle like you've brought the bigger board.

Surf like you haven't.

The Shape

The wide point sits slightly forward, putting foam under your chest where it actually helps with paddling and getting into waves.

But rather than carrying all that volume through the entire board, everything starts becoming progressively more refined as you move towards the business end.

The deck is dropped.

The rails are performance-orientated.

The nose and tail are foiled down.

The outline is pulled in.

And there is more rocker than you'd normally expect from a traditional mid length.

Underneath, we're running a single into double concave with V through the tail, giving the board drive and speed while still allowing it to transition quickly from rail to rail.

The result is a board with enough foam and rail length to paddle and glide, but without that big-board feeling .

More Foam Doesn't Have to Mean Less Performance

This is probably the biggest point behind the board.

There seems to be an assumption that as we get onto longer boards and add litres, we automatically have to give away performance.

I don't think that's necessarily true.

It's about where you put the foam.

Put it where it helps you paddle.

Refine it where you need sensitivity.

Give the surfer rail length for drive and hold, but keep the tail and rails fine enough that the board will still respond when you put your foot down.

That's the balancing act.

And it's what makes this board interesting.

A Different Kind of Step-Up

The Nice Mid-Up isn't really designed as a cruiser that you occasionally try to turn.

It's almost the opposite.

It's a performance surfboard that happens to paddle really well.

Ride it around 4–6 inches longer than your normal board and add roughly 3–5 litres, depending on your weight, ability and what you're trying to achieve.

That gives you the extra paddle power and wave-catching ability without jumping all the way into a big traditional mid length.

Run it as a twin fin for speed, freedom and flow, or order it as a 2+1 if you want another option for control and hold.

Get In Early. Then Get In the Pocket.

That's really what the Nice Mid-Up is about.

You shouldn't have to choose between catching waves easily and surfing them the way you want to surf them.

There's nothing wrong with trimming and cruising when the section calls for it.

But when the wave stands up, this board is designed to let you move back onto the tail, put it on rail and go looking for the pocket.

Paddle power. Glide. Hold. Drive.

But still enough freedom to throw some style and flair into your surfing.

For surfers who love what the mid-length revolution has brought to surfing but aren't ready to give up performance, the Nice Mid-Up fills an interesting space in the quiver.
